CleanBC and BC Hydro Rebates Available for Vernon Homeowners
Quick answer: Vernon homes heated with electric baseboards may qualify for a BC Hydro rebate of up to $4,000. FortisBC's $5,000 dual-fuel heat pump rebate is no longer available (as of October 2026), so gas-heated homes currently have no standard-stream rebate. Income-qualified households may access up to $13,000 (Income Level 1, fossil-fuel conversion) through CleanBC's Energy Savings Program, with pre-registration and an Eligibility Code required before work begins — or, for gas homes keeping a new gas furnace as backup, up to $8,000 through FortisBC's income-qualified dual-fuel rebate (not both).
Cold Climate Performance and Sizing for North Okanagan Winters
Quick answer: Vernon's North Okanagan climate regularly sees temperatures drop to -20°C or colder in winter, making cold climate heat pump selection critical. Properly sizing the unit using a Manual J heat loss calculation ensures efficient operation at extreme lows. Look for models with rated heating capacity at -25°C and ensure your provincially licensed installer accounts for local design temperature data.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a cold climate heat pump cost to install in Vernon BC?
A cold climate heat pump installation in Vernon BC typically costs between $6,000 and $12,000 CAD before rebates in 2026. After rebates — up to $4,000 from BC Hydro for electric-heat homes, or up to $13,000 income-qualified (Income Level 1, fossil-fuel conversion) through CleanBC's Energy Savings Program — out-of-pocket costs vary by rebate stream, system size, and complexity. FortisBC's standard dual-fuel rebate is no longer available, so gas-heated homes that don't income-qualify pay the full installed price.
Can I get CleanBC and FortisBC rebates combined for a heat pump in Vernon?
No. FortisBC's $5,000 dual-fuel rebate for gas-heated homes is no longer available (as of October 2026), so the only standard rebate stream is BC Hydro's (up to $4,000), which applies to electrically heated homes only. Gas-heated Vernon homes currently have no standard-stream rebate. Income-qualified gas-heated homes can choose either CleanBC's Energy Savings Program (up to $13,000 at Income Level 1, fossil-fuel conversion) or FortisBC's income-qualified dual-fuel rebate (up to $8,000, heat pump plus a new high-efficiency gas furnace) — the FortisBC rebate can't be combined with provincial rebates.
What size heat pump do I need for a home in Vernon BC?
Sizing depends on your home's square footage, insulation, and Vernon's local design temperature, which can reach -20°C or below. A provincially licensed installer should perform a Manual J heat loss calculation to recommend the correct capacity, typically between 2 and 5 tons for most Vernon homes.
